On Thursday, IDF soldier Reei Biran was killed in Gaza while courageously defending his country. In a letter he wrote before heading into battle, he left behind a final message for his girlfriend, Avia—a letter filled with love, pain, and the clarity of someone who knew the stakes but chose to fight anyway. His words speak for a generation of young Israelis asked to bear impossible burdens. Read his farewell below.
“My Avia, if you’re reading this letter, I am probably no longer here. If there’s one thing I promised you before the war, it’s that I would take care of myself just like I take care of you. I guess I failed, my Avili.
But it was for a worthy cause, and you need to remember that I was protecting our home. My home, your home.
Avili, if there’s one main thing you taught me in life, it’s what true love is. Boundless love. Endless adventures. Hugs, kisses, laughter, silliness, craziness. You have a heart made of something that doesn’t even exist yet. I’m not here to protect you now, but I hope you’re surrounded by support and love.
You’ve got heavenly protection from me. Every time you feel just a little weak, look up to the sky. I am there. I’ll help you. I’ll be there with you.
Avia, I truly want to believe you’ll never read what I’m writing now. I love you to the end of the world—and back.
Yours forever, Reei ❤️”
