Yesterday, I had the profound honor of visiting the family of Sgt. Habib Kiean in their home in Hura. To see a proud Bedouin family speak with such love and reverence for their son—and such deep pride in his service in the Golani Brigade—was something truly powerful. Their dignity, strength, and patriotism are an example for the entire country.
Habib was just 21 years old. He served in Golani’s 13th Battalion and was stationed at the Paga outpost near Nahal Oz on October 7th. When Hamas terrorists ambushed the base, Habib didn’t run. Wounded and under fire, he stood his ground. He fought until the very last bullet.
Twelve soldiers fell with him, including paramedic Sgt. Ido Binenstock and commander Cpt. Dekel Suissa. Only 13 of the 26 soldiers at the post survived. But Habib’s bravery and loyalty will never be forgotten.
His family remembers his smile, his love for video games, and his favorite meals of steak and mansaf. But above all, they remember a son who chose to serve with honor, even though many in his community do not enlist.
May the memory of Sgt. Habib Kiean be a blessing. And may we all learn from his example.
