This essay was written by Avi Harush, the father of Reef, who was killed while fighting in Gaza as part of his training with the elite Egoz unit. I am sharing his words so people can understand the human cost of this war. Not through statistics or political commentary, but through the voice of a father grieving his son on what should have been his 22nd birthday. Reef was full of life, love, and promise. His absence is a pain that cannot be measured. This letter is more than a tribute. It is a reminder of what war takes from families, from futures, and from all of us.
Reef, my son,
Today is your birthday. You were supposed to turn 22. How sad and painful it is to grasp that you will never be again. How is it possible, my child, to celebrate the birthday of someone who has died?! My child is dead!
You, more than anyone, knew exactly what I wanted to achieve in life. The greatest absurdity is that everything is happening for us just the way I had wished—after you were killed. It makes me angry. It breaks my heart. It’s not fair.
You knew, more than anyone. We talked about it. We talked about what we wanted life to be. With you. With me. You were so worried when things weren’t working out for a while. Do you understand, Reef? What an absurdity. I always say it feels like after your death, you reached out your hands and told us: “Take it. From here, it’s yours.”
So today we will celebrate. We chose to follow what our hearts want. We will be together with those who love you and celebrate your birthday.
People worry, they often tell me not to think about what was or what could have been. But how can I not? Most of my thoughts are about what could have been.
Your post-army trip. You never would have given it up.
Your career after the army. You knew you’d never work for someone else. You wanted to be independent—just like in your life. You decided. You knew exactly what you wanted to do. And I’m certain you would have succeeded.
I once said you didn’t have dreams. “I don’t dream, I do, Dad.” You didn’t dream—you simply planned, and in an organized way, achieved what you wanted. You once showed me how you wrote yourself notes on your phone, laying out steps to reach your goals. Bullet points. Execute. Checkmark.
Your wedding. How many times we talked about it. I saw myself walking with you toward your bride (just like I see myself walking with Zoey one day). You said you didn’t want a noisy hall. You wanted it in the desert or by the sea. Tents, good music, food, drinks, close family, good friends, and so much joy.
The woman who would be with you. Your love. What a heartbreaking loss. You had so much love to give. You would have given her your whole heart.
Your children. You wanted so much to be a father. What a father you would have been—the very best. You will have children, just like you wanted.
A 22nd birthday for my son who was killed.
A 22nd birthday for dreams that were cut short.
A 22nd birthday filled with gratitude for the time you were here.
How the hell does one go through a day like this with sorrow? Only with joy.
We will do everything, Reef, to celebrate with joy! Everyone who knew and knows you—I ask them to rejoice for you. To remember your smiles. Your hugs. Your love. Your life.
Your birthday party was postponed. Your dear friends paused everything after Re’i was killed. This year, we’ll celebrate for both of you.
The day you were born, Reef—I began to live.
The day you were killed, Reef—I died.
I’m learning how to live again, beside you and beside the pain.
Reef, my child. I need you so deeply.
The longing is endless.
Happy birthday, my beloved—wherever you are.
Dad
