Love Without Truth Isn’t Judaism

Rabbis who refused to confront anti-Israel hostility in the name of “Ahavat Yisrael” have forgotten what Jewish love actually demands.

Rabbi Elliot Cosgrove is a sincere and thoughtful leader, devoted to the Jewish people. His call for unity after Zohran Mamdani’s election as New York’s mayor was written with good intentions. But one line in his essay captures the moral confusion eroding much of American Jewish life: “Ahavat Yisrael means refusing to demean, diminish, or shame another Jew’s viewpoint.”

That sentence, offered as a gesture of love, is in fact a symptom of decay. It replaces moral clarity with emotional comfort. It turns Ahavat Yisrael—love of a fellow Jew—into an anesthetic. The crisis of American Judaism is not division. It is confusion: a loss of confidence in the difference between compassion and capitulation.

Judaism has never taught that all opinions are equal simply because they are said by a Jewish person. Love does not require silence. It demands courage—the courage to name falsehood and confront betrayal. To oppose a destructive idea is not to demean its holder. It is to defend what is sacred. There is nothing loving about letting lies pass unchallenged. There is nothing righteous about mistaking moral neutrality for kindness.

To love a fellow Jew is not to affirm everything he believes. It is to care about him enough to say when he is wrong. Disagreement is not a betrayal of Ahavat Yisrael; it is an expression of it. One can reject another’s ideas with conviction and still love him as kin. Real Ahavat Yisrael means caring enough to confront, listening without surrendering, and never confusing silence for respect.

That confusion now defines too much of Jewish communal life. The rise of “diversity, equity, and inclusion” ideology has imported into synagogues a secular theology that inverts Jewish values. DEI divides the world into victims and oppressors and judges moral worth by identity, not conduct. It teaches that truth is subjective, merit oppressive, and excellence suspect. In this new moral order, Jews—the people history tried to erase—are recast as privileged insiders. On campuses, DEI officers exclude antisemitism from hate education because Jews no longer qualify as “marginalized.” The poison has spread from universities to boardrooms to pulpits.

DEI is not an expression of Jewish ethics. It is their negation. Judaism sanctifies responsibility; DEI dissolves it into grievance. Judaism calls for self-scrutiny; DEI demands self-denunciation. Judaism insists that every human being is created in the image of G-d; DEI reduces each person to a demographic statistic. It preaches compassion while erasing conscience.

This is how synagogues become sanctuaries for slogans rather than for faith. A rabbi can thunder about “microaggressions” but whisper about antisemitism. A congregation can host seminars on “intersectionality” but ignore the growing hatred outside its own doors. In this upside-down world, moral clarity is called divisive, and appeasement is praised as unity.

The Torah’s moral universe depends on distinctions—between right and wrong, holy and profane, just and unjust. A Judaism that erases those distinctions in the name of inclusion will not survive as a serious faith. The rabbis of old did not “refuse to shame” those who denied truth. They engaged, argued, and when necessary, condemned. That was not cruelty. It was fidelity.

The failure of moral courage in the face of Mamdani’s rise was not merely political; it was a collapse of the spiritual vocation itself. Being a rabbi isn’t about keeping people comfortable: it’s about keeping them honest. Any New York City rabbi who could watch a candidate openly hostile to Israel ascend to power and say nothing (or say nothing until just days before the election) has forfeited the moral authority of the pulpit. The duty of a rabbi is not to soothe the congregation but to summon it—to awaken moral seriousness, not to narcotize it. To preach softly in the presence of evil is not compassion. It is complicity.

If Ahavat Yisrael is to mean anything, it must mean the courage to draw moral lines. We must say no when the world demands yes, to confront lies even when they come from one’s own camp, and to defend Jewish life without apology. Love does not require approval. It requires truth.

A community that mistakes silence for love will lose both—its moral voice and its future. True Ahavat Yisrael is not a refusal to “demean” bad ideas. It is the refusal to stand by while fellow Jews march toward the edge of a cliff and call it compassion.
