The Miss Israel pageant has existed since 1950. In that time, the title has meant something. It has meant that a young Israeli woman, someone who grew up in this country, served in its army, and lived its reality, would stand on an international stage and represent her nation with pride. That is over now. Not because Israel’s enemies tore it down. Because a franchise owner running the competition out of Miami decided that being Israeli is optional.

Shiraz did not go quietly. In a video posted to her Instagram this week, she spoke directly and without equivocation. “For months I have stayed quiet,” she began. “Throughout my reign as Miss Israel, I have been pressured, intimidated, and threatened for speaking out in support of my country by the Miss Israel organization itself.” That sentence alone should stop every defender of this franchise cold. The woman chosen to represent Israel was punished for defending Israel. By the people who chose her.

According to reporting in The Jerusalem Post and Shiraz’s own account, the franchise holder, Edgar Entertainment, has moved the competition to Miami, opened the field to non-Israeli candidates, and reportedly pre-selected winners who do not speak Hebrew. Shiraz put it plainly: “The competition has become increasingly detached from Israel. It has not been held in Israel, has operated without Hebrew as a component, and has actively encouraged non-Israeli applicants to enter the system.”

Miss Israel is not Miss Jewish Diaspora. It is not a title for a woman from Boca Raton or Beverly Hills who happens to have a Jewish grandmother and can qualify for Israeli citizenship on paper. Miss Israel is for Israelis. Women who grew up in this country, who served in its army, who stood in bomb shelters, who live the daily reality of a nation under siege. No amount of corporate rebranding changes that. The title says Israel. It means Israel.

When Shiraz attempted to raise funds to cover her expenses, she was met not with support but with threats. The franchise owner allegedly demanded she disown her own fundraising as unauthorized, then threatened to strip her title and hit her with tens of thousands of dollars in costs unrelated to her participation. She filed a complaint with Miss Universe in February, citing “financial extortion,” and noted that some of the conduct crossed the line into criminal under U.S. law. She was ignored. A sitting titleholder, representing a country at war, went through every proper channel and was met with silence. This is not a bureaucratic failure. It is a choice.

The organizers have tried to dress up this gutting of the competition as something noble, arguing their new model represents “Jewish peoplehood.” This is not a defense. It is an evasion. Jewish peoplehood is a real concept, but it has nothing to do with what Miss Israel is supposed to be. A Jewish woman from Miami who has never set foot in a miklat, never watched a siren clear a street in thirty seconds flat, does not represent Israel. She represents herself. That is fine. But she is not Miss Israel.

Recordings reviewed by The Jerusalem Post suggest the franchise intends to stage a fake pageant where the winner is predetermined. The producer was explicit: they did it with Estonia, they did it with Armenia, and they want the “surprise element” without any actual competition behind it. The franchise owner, running the competition from Miami, plans to hand-pick a winner who is not Israeli, does not speak Hebrew, and has no real connection to the country whose name she will carry onto the Miss Universe stage. And they will film it to look like a pageant.

Shiraz said she is speaking because she has “a responsibility, as an Israeli and as a woman, to speak when the integrity of Israel’s representation is being compromised.” She took a role seriously and found the institution behind it to be rotten.

Miss Universe speaks constantly about empowering women. Shiraz called that bluff. “Those principles mean very little,” she said, “when documented concerns are ignored, when women are punished and abused for speaking up.” Values announced in press releases are not values. They are marketing copy.

If Edgar Entertainment is unwilling to conduct a genuine competition rooted in the nation it claims to represent, it has no business holding this franchise. The title of Miss Israel belongs to Israeli women. Not to the diaspora. Not to a boardroom in Miami. It is long past time to return the crown to where it belongs.
